When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Saving teeth is part of our commitment to our patients; however, there are reasons for us to recommend tooth extraction. What are they? Take a look at just a few of them listed below:

  • Bacterial accumulation is causing significant decay to form, resulting in extensive damage to your tooth. This can put nearby healthy teeth at risk.
  • Advanced gum disease is causing your teeth to become loose.
  • Facial trauma has resulted in one or more of your teeth becoming badly damaged, making it impossible for us to save them.
  • One or more teeth are impacted beneath the gumline and need to be removed to prevent harm to surrounding teeth.
  • You require orthodontic treatment to address overcrowding, but one or more teeth must be removed to ensure optimal space for successful treatment.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

The process of extracting a tooth always begins with the patient receiving an appropriate anesthetic to make sure they feel no pain during the procedure, and some people may also benefit from sedation treatments that can help them stay calm and still. When the patient is ready, our dentist will use a device called an elevator to lift the tooth from the gum tissue before carefully working it loose with forceps. Once the tooth is out and any sedation treatments have sufficiently worn off, you’ll be ready to go home, and we’ll be sure to provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. It’s best to replace a lost tooth as soon as possible, so we’ll be sure to discuss your prosthetic options during the planning stages of your procedure.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

The best way to stay comfortable and enjoy a smooth healing process after having a tooth removed is to carefully follow our aftercare instructions. These can include:

  • Taking prescribed or over-the-counter medications as instructed
  • Rinsing the mouth with warm salt water to clear away debris and reduce inflammation
  • Refraining from smoking or drinking through a straw
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days after the procedure
  • Propping up your head with pillows when lying down
  • Getting plenty of rest

Replacing lost teeth as soon as possible can help prevent a host of oral and overall health issues like dental misalignments, jaw pain, uneven enamel erosion, gum injuries, malnutrition, and indigestion.
